Pregnancy and Exercise

Benefits of Exercise

Caring for a newborn can be stressful and physically demanding, so it helps to be fit and strong.
Regular exercise during pregnancy can prepare your body for labor and the demands of a new baby.

Many common complaints of pregnancy, including fatigue, varicosities and swelling of extremities, are reduced in women who exercise. Women who chose to remain active and have a exercise routine experience less insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression. The stress and anxiety that might make you restless at night ,can be coped  by exercise routine, giving you a good nights sleep. Also it increases the blood flow to your skin, giving a healthy glow to your complexion.   Evidence suggests that weight-bearing exercises throughout pregnancy can reduce the length of labor and decrease delivery complications. Exercise can help you to feel better. At a time when your body undergoes many structural and physiological changes, exercise can increase your sense of control and boost your energy level. It makes  you feel better by releasing endorphins (naturally occurring chemicals in your brain),  Appropriate exercise can relieve backaches and improve your posture by strengthening and toning muscles in your back, butt, and thighs. Stronger back muscles can help manage back pain and strain as your belly grows It reduces constipation by accelerating movement in your intestine. It prevents wear and tear on your joints (which become loosened during pregnancy due to normal hormonal changes) by activating the lubricating fluid in your joints Strong muscles and a fit heart can greatly ease labor and delivery. Gaining control over your breathing can help you manage pain, especially in cases of lengthy labor. It also has a role to play in recuperation Post –Partum. You'll gain less fat weight during your pregnancy if you continue to exercise. But don't expect or try to lose weight by exercising while you're pregnant. For most women, the goal is to maintain their fitness level throughout pregnancy. Exercise is helpful in improving glycaemic control in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and may play a role in prevention of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Always consult your doctor, physiotherapist or health care professional to make sure your exercise routine won’t harm you or your unborn baby.
